SUMMARY:Working Below the Chaotic Surface [POLITICAL PANEL]
DESCRIPTION:Archetypal Dimensions in the Midst of Collective Flooding With Barry Williams\, Larry Rayburn\, & Marilyn Mathews \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn these turbulent times we are flooded with information and opinion about our political condition. Editorials\, blogs\, and professional pundits reflect our desperate need to know\, not just what is going on\, but what it means. While understandable\, this could also be a defense against the truly psychological examination of our disruptions. We—Barry Williams\, Marilyn Mathews\, and Larry Rayburn—will offer an exploration of the archetypal contours below the surface as we mark the one-year anniversary of the presidential election. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nGiven the speed with which events are currently erupting\, it is impossible to know what elements will be in the foreground this coming November. However\, with what Jung called “careful consideration\,” we will attend to the archetypal images and motifs that have emerged and are emergent in the moment. Certainly\, grief\, sacrifice and the raw dimensions of archetypal reality will\, by definition\, be pertinent\, even if “these times” defy attempts at sense-making. To this task we hope to bring an analytic attitude—noting what is present in the field of our collective chaos\, looking for the small voices that may be stirring\, those that might bring some sanity or meaning. We are more interested in asking how more than why. How do we understand our moment\, and how do we enter into dialogue about such volatile topics\, while acknowledging the trauma\, grief\, and despair that seem to be our constant companions in these times. \n\n\n\nAs we reflect on past political panels\, there always seems to be much left unsaid and unaddressed in the wake of these Friday evening programs. This year\, in response\, we will also host a discussion the following Saturday morning from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm for those of you who would like to join us to explore the issues raised on Friday evening. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBARRY WILLIAMS\, M.DIV.\, PSYD\, is a Jungian Analyst in private practice in Taos\, NM and a member of the C. G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe. For twenty-five years\, together with his wife and late son\, he has been an initiated Mara’akame in the traditional healing path of the Huichol/Wixarika people of the Sierra of central Mexico. Dr. Williams’ particular interests are in dreams\, healing\, shamanism and depth psychology\, and the archetype of sacrifice. \n\n\n\n\n\nLARRY RAYBURN\, MA\, is a Jungian analyst practicing in Santa Fe\, New Mexico and a member of the C. G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe where he is the outgoing (2025) president. He is also a senior training analyst of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. Larry is interested in male psychology\, particularly that of boys and the father\, and in the theories of play and psychic energy. He has presented and taught on the alchemical opus\, contra naturam\, or work against nature\, as expressed in the flow and counter-flow of human life\, the natural world\, and clinical practice. \n\n\n\n\n\nMARILYN MATTHEWS\, MD\, is a psychiatrist and Jungian analyst practicing in Santa Fe. A former president of the C. G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe\, she also has many years of experience on Exam Committees in the IRSJA. Her interest in women’s voices and silences has led to a number of published papers on those topics. Now what holds her attention is the changing pattern of ethics during the current societal and cultural upheaval. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets to Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline registration to attend this program live ENDED on Friday\, November 14\, 2025 at 9:00 am Mountain Time. SUMMARY:The Synchronicity of the Two Red Books [WEBINAR]
DESCRIPTION:Jung\, Tolkein\, and the Imaginal Realm \n\n\n\nby Becca Tarnas \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBeginning in the years leading up to the Great War\, both C. G. Jung and J. R. R. Tolkien independently began to undergo profound imaginal experiences. Jung recorded these fantasies in a large red manuscript that he named Liber Novus\, referred to simply as The Red Book. For Tolkien\, this imaginal journey revealed to him the world of Middle-earth\, whose stories and myths eventually led to the writing of The Lord of the Rings\, a book he named within its own imaginal history The Red Book of Westmarch. This workshop explores the many synchronistic parallels between Jung’s and Tolkien’s Red Books: the style and content of their works of art\, the narrative descriptions and scenes in their texts\, the nature of their visions and dreams\, and an underlying similarity in world view that emerged from their experiences. The two men seem to have been simultaneously treading parallel paths through the imaginal realm. \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis webinar will consist of an opening lecture on the parallels between Jung’s and Tolkien’s Red Books\, followed by a communal dialogue exploring the meaning of certain key visions and fantasies in C.G. Jung’s Red Book. Participants can expect to engage a close reading of parts of the text and a collective exploration of the illustrations that illuminate Jung’s Liber Novus. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBECCA TARNAS\, PHD\, is Assistant Professor in the Philosophy\, Cosmology\, and Consciousness program at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Her research interests include depth psychology\, archetypal studies\, literature\, philosophy\, and the ecological imagination. Becca is an editor of Archai: The Journal of Archetypal Cosmology and author of the book Journey to the Imaginal Realm. She is currently researching and writing a biography of Stanislav Grof\, a co-founder of transpersonal psychology. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets to Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration to attend this program LIVE ended on Friday\, January 16\, 2026 at 12:00 pm Mountain Time. You can still purchase a ticket for access to the Video recording until Friday\, January 23\, 2026. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe ZOOM link will be sent out to everyone who registered on Friday\, January 16\, 2025 by 4:00 pm Mountain Time. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis webinar will be video recorded. SUMMARY:Hillman and Soul-Making in Troubled Times [WEBINAR]
DESCRIPTION:by Rebecca & Dennis Pottenger \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn our troubled times we come together to follow James Hillman’s operations of soul-making to engage with aspects of soul that seek expression in the world through us. \n\n\n\nBoth Hillman and Jung stressed the need to tend to the world we live in. Jung wrote that the project of individuation must engage the moral challenge of differentiating from unconscious influences toward bringing something of value into the world. He also observed that what we do not face within ourselves\, we face in the world as fate. Civilization is seeing a global expansion of authoritarianism\, and we are meeting the collective shadow as fate in dreadful social\, political\, and environmental consequences. \n\n\n\n\n\nMythologist Michael Meade described these times as a slow apocalypse. Following the original meaning of apocalypse\, what shadow material is being revealed in these times and what is our task in meeting it? \n\n\n\nIn A Blue Fire\, Hillman wrote “Culture [is] a mythic enterprise” and the ego must be resilient enough to engage in outer life and its uncertainties: Following fear as a path into the imaginal possibilities at work in the depths of culture and soul so that we might “orient life by their compass.” \n\n\n\nDuring this webinar\, we will take an image-rich\, PowerPoint discussion of Hillman’s processes of soul-making and the telling of a mythic tale into active imagination to connect with and allow ourselves to feel and be moved by archetypal\, transpersonal\, and ensouled energies seeking expression in our lives\, returning us to hope\, vitality\, wisdom\, and a sense of community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREBECCA AND DENNIS POTTENGER are Jungian-oriented psychotherapists in Fresno\, CA. Rebecca leads women’s retreats premised on creative engagement with Hillman’s theory and edits depth-psychological works. Dennis authored Alchemy\, Jung\, and Remedios Varo and has several forthcoming books applying Jungian and Hillmanian theory to racism\, white supremacy\, and authoritarianism. They co-led a monthly Jungian learning circle from 2011-2018 and have presented at the Jungian Society for Scholarly Studies and Jung Associations of Central Ohio and Pheonix. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets to Register\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration for this program ended on Friday\, February 20\, 2026 at 12:00 pm Mountain Time. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe ZOOM link will be sent out to everyone who registered on Friday\, February 20\, 2026 after registration closes and by 4:00 pm Mountain time. \n\n\n\n\n\nThis lecture will be video recorded. Everyone who registers will receive access to the video one week later. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n**Note: You must attend the LIVE lecture via ZOOM  to receive CEU credit (ie: no CEUs offered for only watching the video recording after the event).

SUMMARY:Active Imagination With Music [LECTURE]
DESCRIPTION:by Rich Ryan \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMusic is the most direct and mysterious way of conveying and evoking feeling. It is a way of connecting one consciousness to another. I think the nearest thing to telepathy is making music together. –Oliver Sacks \n\n\n\nCarl Jung discovered the process he later named Active Imagination during his “encounter with his unconscious.” This journey led him to a 16-year project that ultimately culminated in the creation of The Red Book. Active Imagination has been elaborated upon and utilized through writing\, painting\, drawing\, dancing\, and sandplay. However\, the application of Active Imagination through music has not been extensively explored or documented. \n\n\n\nMusic offers a rich projective field for engaging with the unconscious and the process of individuation. It functions as an archetypal and instinctive phenomenon\, operating autonomously within the psyche. \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Friday evening program will demonstrate that music serves as a portal to the unconscious and acts as an archetypal force for accessing the collective unconscious. I invite you to explore this idea with me and share a musical experience through Jung’s method of Active Imagination by listening to music together. \n\n\n\nIn the Saturday workshop\, we will delve deeper into the Active Imagination process using several short\, selected pieces of music. Materials will be available for you to respond to your experiences through drawing and writing\, and one particular piece of music will serve as a prompt for movement\, dance\, or spontaneous expression. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRICH RYAN\, PhD LCSW trained at the Jung Institute of Los Angeles where he is a member analyst. He is also a member of the Interregional Society of Jungian Analysts and the C. G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe\, where he is the incoming (2025) president and teaches in the Analyst Training Program. SUMMARY:The Archetype of the Kore-Virgin in the Life of Georgia O'Keeffe [LECTURE]
DESCRIPTION:by Sarah Hoagland \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat does it mean for a woman to be a Virgin-spiritually and psychologically-one-unto herself? \n\n\n\nHow is creative process linked to individuation\, allowing the I-thou relationship to unfold and serve as a mirror to one’s emerging authentic personality? Why might women require solitude and a “Room of One’s Own” in order to strip away adaptations that arise from cultural conditioning that would otherwise eclipse their individuation process? In what ways does following the still small voice of the psyche—connecting to one’s nature\, bio rhythms and creative impulses—open a psychic space of generativity and flow that allows for the emergence of a living feminine soul in the world? \n\n\n\nFor a woman’s individuation to unfold\, the archetypal patterns of the Kore arise as “inner necessity.” Georgia O’Keeffe eschewed the cultural conditioning of her times by following the still small voice of her creative inspirations to become who she was. In Jung’s essay\, “The Psychological Aspects of the Kore” (CW9i para 306)\, Jung suggests that the Kore archetype could be a Supraordinate personality or Self figure for women. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Friday evening lecture will examine these ideas and show how O’Keeffe arrived at creating her own painting style. We will consider her initial intent of creating forms that she felt were particular to the psyche of a woman\, a definition she quickly abandoned in order not to be seen exclusively as a woman or woman’s painter. We will consider O’Keeffe’s own words and the evolution of her experimental charcoal drawings of 1915 in her effort to paint as a “Virgin”—spiritually and psychologically—“one-unto-herself.” \n\n\n\nIn Saturday’s workshop\, “The Kore Archetype in Women’s Individuation and Creative Process\,” we will explore what it means for a woman to become “one-unto-herself” with O’Keeffe’s example in mind. Through writing prompts for reflection and sharing together\, we will reflect on the ways the values of the Kore Archetype relate to your own lives\, and personal myth. We will view in more depth O’Keeffe’s paintings and explore the nature of creative process and identity development. We will ground these experiences in the body and include time for free play with line\, color and form. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSARAH HOAGLAND\, MA\, LPC is a certified Jungian Analyst and has been in private practice in Portland\, Oregon since 2004.
