SUMMARY:ANCIENT GREEK MYSTERY RITES AND THE ETHICS OF INDIVIDUATION [LECTURE]

Out of a mortal\, you have become a god.A kid\, you fell into milk. \n\n\n\nThis text is an example of many found inscribed on gold leaves and placed in the hands or mouths of the dead who were Bacchic or Orphic initiates. In this presentation we will explore what is known about the ancient Greek mysteries\, including group ritual practices and also initiation rituals of a voluntary\, secret\, and personal character that aimed at personal transformation through a transcendent experience of the sacred.  \n\n\n\n\n\nFor over 2\,000 years\, these rites promised to teach initiates that death was not a curse\, but a blessing. We will explore the relevance of the mysteries for understanding our own processes of initiation and individuation\, in which we approach functional immortality by means of our conscious suffering\, experiences of ecstasy\, and personal encounter with the Divine. The goals of initiation differ from the goals of other kinds of psychotherapy\, posing different ethical implications. Understanding the symbols and patterns of initiation can illuminate the individuation journey\, and enlighten\, enliven and deepen analytic work. \n\n\n\nIn Saturday’s workshop\, we will discover the Egyptian roots of the initiation rites and the symbols common to both. We will then delve into the rich visual symbols in the Villa of Mysteries in Pompeii. Finally\, we will explore how these rites resonate with our own mysteries of individuation. We will also explore the clinician’s ethical considerations involved in this kind of in-depth work. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFRANCES HATFIELD\, PH.D\, MFT\, is a training analyst at the C. G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe\, and the C. G. Jung Institute of San Francisco\, with a practice in Santa Fe. She was poetry editor of Jung Journal: Culture and Psyche from 2018 to 2023\, and is the author of a book of poems\, Rudiments of Flight (Wings Press\, 2013). Dr. Hatfield is currently writing a book about the archetype of Dionysus and the Quantum Age. SUMMARY:Being With the Body in Depth Psychology: Trauma and Its Transformation in the Unspoken Realm [LECTURE]
DESCRIPTION:By BARBARA HOLIFIELD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe body is a portal to the numinous dimensions of the soul’s life—to healing and wholeness that goes far beyond just the relief of traumatic symptoms\, leading to a greater access to feelings and a renewed sense of soulful aliveness. \n\n\n\nJungian Analysis and Depth Psychology turn toward the deepest currents of the soul\, where dreams and life experiences take on cohesive wisdom and unfold in ways that orient and guide the individual. The ancestors knew this—shamans\, healers\, medicine people\, and spiritual teachers looked to dreams\, visions\, and synchronicities to guide the individual. They knew that these often spoke not just to the individual but were messages that also offered guidance to the community. This realm Jung called “the Spirit of the Depths.” Here one can re-connect with oneself and our collective body—consciously–– rather than perpetuating the unconscious group-think that is characteristic of “the Spirit of the Times.” \n\n\n\n\n\nMuch of the current research in trauma studies and neuroscience points to the primary significance of the body in accessing and working through developmental wounds that constellate complex trauma. This presentation will explore how the body remembers the affective reverberations of trauma\, not in conceptual form\, but more like a musical phrase; an affective pattern that gets relived and repeated. To experience the body in Depth Psychotherapy is to enter the non-conceptual world\, where meaning arises from direct experience\, and the nonverbal dimension of the archetype is felt. \n\n\n\nIn Saturday’s workshop\, we will further this exploration through experiential practices\, including Authentic Movement\, to discover how the mythopoetic reality revealed in Depth Psychotherapeutic process weaves the experience of the body into a tapestry of personal meaning\, facilitating deep transformation. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBARBARA HOLIFIELD\, MSW\, SEP\, is a San Francisco Jungian Analyst who recognizes the body as an intrinsic aspect of psyche. She is a former professor of Somatic Psychology at CIIS and has decades of experience with Somatic Experiencing and Authentic Movement. SUMMARY:Psychologizing in the Age of Corruption [POLITICAL PANEL]
DESCRIPTION:By BARRY WILLIAMS\, LARRY RAYBURN\, & MARILYN MATTHEWS \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOver the last year we have struggled to remain consciously engaged in a discussion of what Jung called “these times.” We have entertained the complexes\, cultural and personal\, at work and the inexorable trend toward corruption amidst the barrage of words and images meant to demand we submit to an ever-narrowing world view. \n\n\n\nWhile the center of our national stage is occupied by one character\, we have attempted to cast our net wider and deeper\, looking for what our era has constellated. We have explored the tyranny and threat to women and the feminine\, the consequences for Nature and the human community\, and for individual meaning amidst a flood of shadow-driven emotions\, personal animus\, not to mention our normal human tendency toward dissociation and denial. \n\n\n\n\n\nWe have continued to use our imaginal and analytic tools on the underlying dynamism of the psyche—of the shadow\, the mythic representations of Mercurius\, as well as attacks on linking\, both within and without. Additionally\, we have wondered about the predominance of left brain reasoning\, at the cost of right-brain feeling\, to address our current crises. \n\n\n\nAmidst it all we contend with our unsettling feelings of rage and hopelessness while holding the possibility for change. What\, we ask\, is the fate of love and eros in such a time?Depth Psychology\, emphasizing the symbolic and imaginal\, engages the underlayment of our cultural and political life. We will again each offer a brief topic salient to our situation. These presentations will be followed by an inter-panel discussion and time for questions and comments from the audience. We hope you will join us. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBARRY WILLIAMS\, M.DIV.\, PSYD\, is a Jungian Analyst in private practice in Taos\, NM and a member of the C. G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe. For twenty-five years\, together with his wife and late son\, he has been an initiated Mara’akame in the traditional healing path of the Huichol/Wixarika people of the Sierra of central Mexico. Dr. Williams’ particular interests are in dreams\, healing\, shamanism and depth psychology\, and the archetype of sacrifice. \n\n\n\n\n\nLARRY RAYBURN\, MA\, is a Jungian analyst practicing in Santa Fe\, New Mexico and a member of the C. G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe where he is the outgoing (2025) president. He is also a senior training analyst of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. Larry is interested in male psychology\, particularly that of boys and the father\, and in the theories of play and psychic energy. He has presented and taught on the alchemical opus\, contra naturam\, or work against nature\, as expressed in the flow and counter-flow of human life\, the natural world\, and clinical practice. \n\n\n\n\n\nMARILYN MATTHEWS\, MD\, is a psychiatrist and Jungian analyst practicing in Santa Fe. A former president of the C. G. Jung Institute of Santa Fe\, she also has many years of experience on Exam Committees in the IRSJA. Her interest in women’s voices and silences has led to a number of published papers on those topics.
