This is a hands-on workshop on courting the unconscious through drawing and painting. We’ll meet in my studio and examine the place that art holds in Jungian thought and in our lives. We will explore how fraught it is to let the unconscious loose in a drawing and how to help that happen. We’ll use our own dreams as our library and source for imagery and symbol-making.

We’ll meet four times over the year, in the hopes of developing a working group whose members will pursue their own search between sessions. In the first meeting we’ll begin with exercises in active imagination and spontaneous drawing. Later sessions will start with group discussion of work brought in for review and gesture drawing as a warm up for working on dream content. With any luck, we’ll organize a group show in the spring.

Sessions can be attended individually, but continuity is encouraged. The emphasis will be on making art from dream material, on finding aesthetic resolution of psychic conflicts, and on exploring the intersection of depth psychology and visual thinking.   Some artistic experience is helpful, or at least an orientation towards the arts.

Location: Sculpture Ranch, 15 Nova Road, Santa Fe.

Four 6-hour sessions, 9 am to 3 pm, lunch provided; Sept. 28, Nov. 23, Jan. 25, Mar. 28.

Fee: $100/session, $400 for series (limit 8 people); CEUs not available for this workshop.
