Archetypal Manifestations in the World of Warcraft: The Gamers’ World in Jungian Analysis

April 10 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

$10

SHERYL CORCHNOY, M.A., LMFT

What really moves us? It’s the deep connection and relatedness between us. It’s ancient wisdom weaving itself into the fabric of time with archetypal dynamism, viscerally recognizable no matter the magnitude of development and transformation. It’s the dedication of the analytic community to our own guiding paradox, braving the unknown while holding authenticity and curiosity sacred. The convergence of these things calls for our focused attention as we stand in the fierce winds of evolution itself—the birth of socially-bound communities in the virtual worlds of computer games.

Well before the Covid-19 Pandemic there were half a billion gamers in the world. Now the games industry reports record numbers as millions more turn to online gaming for related contact and entertainment from home. The most highly populated game today? World of Warcraft (WoW) —but it isn’t just a game. It’s a virtual environment—a derivative story wherein world mythologies are key elements in a neurologically immersive experience. Playing one’s representing Avatar, emblematic of self, produces a physiological experience of proximity and interpersonal connection, even evoking projection and complex activation.

The program will view WoW through the Jungian lens, holding in mind our value of the ancient and historic collective. We’ll observe fully present archetypal expression inherent to the evolution of civilization and technology. We’ll interactively tour the World and experience Avatar creation, supported by analytic case material, and join together in dialogue germane to bringing our own related voices to this unparalleled intersection of psyche and technology—and imagine how the engagement in this virtual environment may inform us about the inner and outer worlds of ourselves and our patients. We’ll relate this to our collective ortgeist and maybe catch a glimpse of the archetypal gamer within.
